Raquel’s Story
by Stephanie Snow Gebel
In October of 2010, my five-year old daughter, Raquel, was diagnosed with Wolfram syndrome, a rare disease which initially presents as Type I Diabetes and ultimately progresses to vision, hearing and brain loss. The onset is typically at 4-5 years old with a 5-8 year span before hearing, vision and brain degeneration begins. Tragically, sixty percent of patients affected by Wolfram syndrome die by their 30th birthday.
As a mother, my heart aches and it’s hard to breathe when I think of watching my child deteriorate before my eyes. But, I believe God knows that I can make a difference, first for this outstanding team of Washington University School of Medicine researchers, and ultimately for children everywhere affected by this disease.
Please help me raise the money needed to conduct these Wolfram Clinics. The team at Wash U, led by Dr. Fumihiko Urano, is very close to identifying potential treatment options. I am confident that with the money raised, this team of researchers can find a cure to stop the neurological degeneration of Wolfram syndrome, as well as those affected by other neurological disorders. They are so close, but it all comes down to funding. Please help contribute to our foundation and help save my daughter and others like her.
The upcoming “GET FIT EXPO” will kick off with the Get Fit Obstacle Course designed for whole family! Try your skill at Rock Wall Climbing and springing high in the air from an onsite trampoline. This year sign up for the INDOOR TRIATHLON and earn a Gold’s Gym MEDAL. Dance to Live Music by the band BITTER PILL. You will be entertained, receive beauty tips, nutrition and medical advice. Enjoy and educate yourself with healthy living programs, personal trainers, authors, family friendly activities and endurance challenges, all to STRENGTHEN our community.
The first 300 guests to enter will receive the perfect Gold’s Gym SWAG BAG filled with healthy items. Expo guests will also be able to purchase tickets for a chance to win the “Ultimate GET FIT Prize Package,” A four-night Funjet Vacations all-inclusive Riviera Maya getaway for you and a guest. With over 35,000 members and 6000 plus guest who come thru Gold’s Gym doors are just a few of the community guests we will be inviting to attend for a strong campaign promoting the Get Fit Expo benefiting The Snow Foundation. The time is now to GET FIT!
About the Snow Foundation: Stephanie Snow Gebel, daughter of the late Jack Snow, “Voice of the Rams”, founded The Snow Foundation with her brother, former San Francisco Giant and Six-Time Gold Glove Winner, J.T. Snow, when her daughter Raquel was diagnosed with the rarest form of diabetes, Wolfram syndrome, at age 5. Wolfram syndrome typically strikes children around the tender age of four with a five-to-eight year span before the loss of hearing, vision and brain function begins. The Snow Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of and funding for Wolfram syndrome research in hopes of revolutionizing the diabetic world.
Lamm notes “Get pumped to GET FIT and create a stronger community helping one person at a time to begin, build and believe in life changing actions.”
